Volter, a renegade European vampire arrives in a small Ohio town bent on destroying a colony of mutant vampires (neither fully vampire nor fully human), which he believes to be an inferior disgrace to the true vampire race. The mutants have kept their identity unknown, as they are no threat to the human population. It is Volter’s goal is to turn the blame for his ensuing bloody rampage upon the mutants themselves, hoping they will be destroyed by the citizens once their identity is revealed. However, a local amateur detective and his friends become involved in the fight to eradicate Volter and save the reputation of the mutants who are solid community members. But Volter is a formidable force not easily defeated.

Part thriller, part horror, part humor, Jon McDonald's 'Bloodlines - The Quest' is a new take on your typical vampire-slaying storyline.

In the opening few chapters, we see four teens gruesomely drained of their blood by a vampire who prefers "joggers and athletes - high red blood cell count - very tasty." We learn that "the girls were sweet with a light lilac flavor, and the boys were a little salty with just a touch of chamomile." Descriptive? Indeed.

The interest starts to build when we learn that in Brampton, Ohio, there is a hidden vampire colony better known as 'night sleepers' or 'mutants'. But they are not the threat. The threat comes in the form of another breed, a 'day sleeper' simply known as the Vampire 'Voltaire' - 'The Renegade'. He's arrived in Brampton to uncover and destroy the mutants; to have them run out of town or lynched by the local authorities.

So he sets about on a killing spree, drawing attention to the mutants who, until now, have managed to live a peaceful existence within the community on a diet of animal blood. Bring on the war of the vampires!

An interesting battle ensues, where ordinary members of the community (read: non-vampires) must join forces with the mutants or night-sleepers to eradicate the day sleeper from their midst. But eliminating a vampire is not a simple task. Only complete tissue destruction can destroy a day sleeper, and even a small portion of cellular tissue that remains after a slaying can mean instant replication.

To make matters worse, there's only a short period of time where the two breeds can meet - as daylight is a poison to one, and darkness death to the other.

The two have been mortal enemies for many years. Who will win the war?

More short story, McDonald's offering is definitely easily read and definitely entertaining. There are some pretty gruesome scenes, including one at a theme park, where Voltaire makes light work of the House of Horrors in a feeding frenzy not easily forgotten. However, these scenes are interspersed with much lighter fare, meaning the story is not too heavy on the palate.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. However, there were a couple of parts I found slightly unbelievable. It seemed unusual how quickly the mutants seem to be accepted by the rest of the community, supposedly because they fed only off animals. The regular humans even, without hesitation, set up a blood donation service so that the mutants had blood of their own available for transfusions (being that theirs was a different type to the typical human's). It was also odd that, before the final showdown, Voltaire telepathically 'heard' his hunters' invitation to come meet them but, at the same time, could not also hear their plans to bring him down.

Nonetheless, they call it fiction for a reason, and these issues did not really detract from the story. Worth a read. Especially liked the epilogue which sets McDonald up for another fang-bearing novel with a last-minute vampire replication...just when you thought the story was over!

Bloodlines The Quest Jon McDonald 9781495245756 Books Reviews

This vampire story is quite different from the usual fare. It's whimsical, and if you are a fan of the cozy, you will enjoy the characters who people this book. Yes, folks die, but it's not as gory as many of these stories are.

That being said, a few things bothered me. I don't buy that the mutant vampires would be ignorant about food preparation even if they don't eat human food. Since they've been fitting into the community for a hundred years, surely they'd want to be seen buying groceries. Anyone can read a recipe or use a prepared mix to create cupcakes although they might not own cupcake tins. Secondly, there is no explanation given for their sensitivity to the dark. Wouldn't it be more logical for them maybe to have a greater sensitivity to light (without bursting into flames), perhaps sunburn easily or have to wear dark glasses so that they aren't blinded by the light? Third, the relationship between Stella and Knocker seems to happen too quickly, and since it does, it doesn't seem logical for Stella to be hurt by Knocker's cavalier attitude about their quick coupling. She is an older woman who's traveled the world and shouldn't expect a commitment under such circumstances.

All in all, it's an imaginative story. Val Stasik, author of Incidental Daughter
I haven't read any of McDonald's other work, but I can say one thing - I certainly will now. His satirical voice is mixed with drama and a cool vampire story, for once. I am far from a fan of the genre, but I still give it a go every once in a while. This didn't have the young, teen thriller vibe of other popular vampire novels. Instead, it was a slightly darker, edgier narrative that managed to keep me guessing from start to finish. Obviously, there has to be certain moments where a reader shakes his head at how ridiculous a series of events is, but that's part of the genre, and a guilty pleasure of mine. I quite enjoyed the different take on mixing with the human population that this author took, which is different from many other authors, movies, and television series. McDonald's creativity and his gift of writing is apparent, and the fact that he only started writing 5 years ago is unbelievable. It's a very impressive jaunt into a very cliche genre, and if the titles of his other books are any indication, he is clearly versatile and has plenty of books in him. That's the best sort of author to experience at the beginning of a career - one who promises a lot more. Mutant vampires are suddenly a lot cooler in my mind....who knew?
I'm not normally one for anything to do with vampires, but a good premise is a good premise, and I liked the possibilities that a book like that could have. I'm still not completely sold on the genre, but Bloodlines at least pushed me towards being a supporter. It had its faults, mainly inconsistencies within the descriptions and stories of the vampire, and general levels of explanation that were lacking about bits and pieces of the plot.

As much as that sounds like major problems, they weren't, but they were somewhat jarring at times. It's never good to be taken out of a moment in literature by something that doesn't seem to make sense, but fortunately, McDonald did a good job drawing me back in each time with the rich characters and the action-filled plot. It certainly wasn't boring. It wouldn't be my top recommendation at book club next month, but that will be more due to my own surprise at liking it as much as I did, rather than for any lack of skill in the writing. Nicely done, McDonald.
